Commandaria is an ancient sweet dessert wine with a rich history. It has the distinction of being the oldest named wine in the world. Its origins can be traced back to 800 B.C when the Greek poet, Hesiod, first mentioned it.

During the Crusades in the 12th century, Commandaria gained international recognition when England's crusader king, Richard the Lionheart, tasted it during his marriage to Berengaria of Navarre. The wine's exceptional quality impressed him, and he famously declared it as "the wine of the kings and the king of the wines."

Today, Commandaria continues to be produced in the same region of Cyprus where it originated. The wine is made from two indigenous grape varieties, Xynisteri and Mavro, and is aged in oak barrels for at least two years. It has a rich, amber color and a complex bouquet of dried fruits, nuts, and honey. Its taste is sweet and intense, with a long, lingering finish.

Despite its long history, Commandaria remains a popular wine today, both in Cyprus and around the world. Its unique taste and exceptional quality continue to impress wine lovers and connoisseurs alike.
